The question almost everybody opens with is what size sump pump to buy. It is a reasonable question and it has no answer over the phone, which sounds evasive until you see how the recommendation is actually made. A pump is specified against a rate of water arriving, a height it has to be raised, and a distance it has to be pushed. Miss any of the three and the equipment is either working far harder than it needs to or quietly losing the one afternoon that counted.
Why the House Two Streets Over Is Not a Guide
Wilmington makes this point better than most markets. The city sits where hard Piedmont ground gives way to coastal plain sand, and the difference is not a geological curiosity, it is a completely different rate of water arriving at a pit. Here is the measurement that changes the conversation. During wet weather, with the pump isolated safely, the water in the pit rises at a rate somebody can time. A rise of an inch in a minute in a pit of known diameter is a volume per minute, and that volume is what the equipment has to beat with margin left over. It is the difference between a specification and an opinion, and it takes very little time to establish.
The same measurement answers a question households ask constantly, which is whether the pump is struggling or the ground is unusual. A pump running hard against a genuinely heavy inflow is doing its job. A pump running hard against a modest inflow has a problem, and the problem is usually the check valve, the intake or the discharge line rather than the motor. Without the fill rate, those two situations look and sound identical from the top of the stairs.
Lift and Run: the Work That Never Gets Credit
Every pump is rated to move a volume, and every rating assumes a height. Raise the water further and the same unit moves less of it. Add a long horizontal run and turns and it moves less again, because friction in the pipe is real work. A deep Wilmington pit with a line running the length of the house to a sensible release point is asking considerably more of a pump than a shallow pit with a short straight exit, and the two should not receive the same equipment.
Where the line ends is part of the specification rather than an afterthought.
