Most lower floors in older St Louis houses have two holes in them. One is the sump pit, which collects groundwater from the soil outside and holds it until the pump lifts it away. The other is the floor drain, which is connected into the building's drain system and is meant to take water away by gravity. They sit a few strides apart, they both go down into the dark, and on the night water appears on the floor almost nobody can say which one it came out of.
That is the question the rest of this page is built around, because the answer decides everything. One of those openings has a pumping answer. The other does not, and no amount of sump pump buys anything against it.
Groundwater Rises, a Drain Pushes Back
Water entering the sump pit is groundwater. It has soaked through the soil outside, run along the drainage at the footing, and arrived at the lowest point available. It is usually clear or lightly silted, it fills the pit gradually, and it rises with the level in the pit rather than spreading straight across the floor. The pump exists precisely for this and does the job well.
Water coming out of a floor drain is going the wrong way through a pipe that was built to carry it away. It shows up around the drain rather than at the walls, it can be dirty and can carry a smell, and it stops of its own accord when whatever was overwhelming the line downstream eases off. Nothing in the pit is involved. A pump can only move water that reaches the pit, and this water is arriving somewhere else.
Why the Difference Decides What You Buy
A household that reads a backing-up drain as a pump failure spends on equipment, installs it properly, and meets the identical wet floor at the next heavy rain. A household that reads a genuine pit overflow as a drain problem has a clean line and a pump that is beaten. Both are common in St Louis and both are avoidable in one visit, because the two are told apart by where the water is, what it looks like, and what the pit level was doing at the time.

Two Systems That Should Never Be Joined
The temptation on an older property is to solve the sump discharge by tying it into the nearest drain, since the pipe is right there and it goes downhill. It is the single worst thing that can be done to this arrangement. The moment heavy rain puts the drain system under pressure, a pump connected to it is pushing against the very thing that is already struggling, and in the worst version it delivers the pit's water straight back into the room through the floor drain. Clear water belongs outside the building, not in a pipe built for waste.
Outside is its own decision. The line has to run far enough with enough fall that the water does not soak back down to the drainage at the footing and return to the pit, and it must not be aimed at a walk, a drive or a boundary. A pipe that lets go a step from the wall creates a loop the pump runs forever, and the household concludes the pump is too small when the pipe is too short.
The Valve That Decides Whether the Pit Empties
A column of water stands in the discharge pipe above the pump, and the check valve holds it there once the motor stops. When the valve fails, that column drops back into the sump pit immediately, the level rises past the float switch, and the pump starts again on water it has already lifted. It does not sound like a fault. The equipment simply does double the work from then on, and a motor with years left in it wears out early.

What the Pit's Size Costs the Motor
The pit, not the pump, sets how much water moves per start. Too small and the level is back at the float within seconds, so the pump short-cycles and spends its rated duty in a fraction of the time. Too large and water stands between long gaps, goes stale, and drops sediment onto the intake screen. Neither shows up as drama, and both quietly shorten the life of whatever is sitting in the pit.
Continuous running is a separate reading. It can mean the inflow has genuinely grown, it can mean the float is jammed in the on position, and it can mean the water is leaving and coming straight back through a short discharge. Those have three different answers, and telling them apart means watching a full cycle rather than guessing from the noise.
A Second Pump With Its Own Power
A battery backup is a second pump carrying its own power source, and it answers the failure that nothing else does: the storm takes the electricity at the same moment the ground starts delivering, and a perfectly healthy pump has nothing to run on. Be precise about the boundary. It carries a pit through an outage measured in hours, with the number falling as the inflow rises. It is not indefinite, it is not a reason to keep a failing primary in service, and it does nothing about a drain that is backing up, because that was never the pump's water.
Testing the Pit, and Watching the Drain
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float switch lifts. The pump should start, take the level down, and stop cleanly without kicking back on a moment later. Listen for a motor turning with no water moving, and watch whether the level climbs again the instant it stops. Two minutes, twice a year, in autumn and again before the spring.
The second habit is free and just as valuable: during the next hard rain, go down and look at both openings. Note where the pit level sits and whether anything is happening at the floor drain. Do that once and you will never again have to guess which system your wet floor belongs to, which is worth more than any single part on this page.
The Limits Worth Stating Plainly
