Somebody looked at your plumbing and said the drain needs cleaning. That sentence is doing a great deal of work, because on an older St Louis property there are at least three pipes it could be describing, and they are not variations on a theme. They differ in diameter, in what loads them, in how a technician reaches them and in what a repair would involve if cleaning turns out not to be the answer.
Inside the Wall, Under the Floor, Out Under the Ground
Start at the fixture. A branch line is the narrow pipe running from a sink, tub or appliance to wherever it joins the rest. It is short, it is small, and it clogs from what one fixture sends into it, which is usually soap, hair, food waste or grease within a few feet of the trap.
Those branches gather into the building drain, the larger horizontal run beneath the lowest floor that collects everything and carries it out through the wall. In a lot of Missouri brick stock this is cast iron, it is visible in places, and it is where several fixtures' worth of load first travel together. Past the wall it becomes the lateral: the buried run crossing the property to the public connection, in jointed clay on much of the older stock, and the only section that tree roots can reach. Three pipes, one word, and a household that says the drain is slow has no way of knowing which one it means.
Each Section Loads in Its Own Way
Naming the section usually narrows the cause before the camera confirms it. A branch problem is local and affects one fixture. A building drain problem shows several fixtures slowing together, and in older St Louis cast iron it is very often scale narrowing the bore from the wall inward, which is what the trade means by descaling. A lateral problem takes the whole property down at once and adds a cause the other two cannot have, because roots only reach pipe that is in the ground.
What high-pressure water does is the same in each: a nozzle is drawn along the line while water is directed backward against the pipe wall, scouring the whole inside surface rather than boring a channel through the middle of a blockage. Grease comes off the crown, sludge is carried out rather than pushed along, scale is cut back toward the bore the pipe started with, and root hair left on a joint face after a cutter head has passed is stripped away. Some findings rule out the work whichever pipe they turn up in. A collapsed length has no bore left to clean. A joint that has shifted badly out of line will catch the hose and is a structural fault regardless. A pipe walled thin by long corrosion may not survive the pressure, and the camera is how that is discovered without paying for the discovery.
Where they sit changes the answer that follows, which is the whole reason for pinning down the section first. A fault in accessible cast iron under the lowest floor is a different scope from the same fault forty feet out under a St Louis yard, and the second may point at a trenchless repair rather than an open dig. A technician locates the cleanout, runs the video camera inspection, and talks through what is on screen before any work begins. The number to listen for is the distance: how many feet from the entry point the condition changes, because that is what converts a description into a section. If the run is a candidate, the hose goes in, the affected stretch is cleaned back to the wall, and the camera goes down again so the result is recorded.
Ask for that distance and keep it. It is the fact that lets you compare one recommendation with another, and it is the fact most quotes leave out.
