The question people ring about most on this service is why the pump keeps running when it has not rained in two weeks. Everywhere the answer is groundwater. In Raleigh it is groundwater roughly half the time, and the other half the water never came from outside at all. It came down a pipe from somewhere upstairs, and the pit has been doing that job quietly for years.

Cooling equipment produces condensate, and in this climate it produces a great deal of it across a season that runs most of the year. That water has to be carried away, and where the equipment sits on a lower level the shortest legal route is frequently a small pipe into the sump pit. It is a perfectly ordinary arrangement in Raleigh. It also means the pit takes a slow, warm, continuous delivery through every humid month with no connection whatsoever to rainfall.
It is rarely the only one. A dehumidifier draining by hose, a washing machine standpipe, the discharge from a water heater's relief valve, and a drain at the foot of an exterior stair can all end in the same pit, added at different times by different people for good reasons. Nobody keeps a list, and in North Carolina that list is exactly what a diagnosis needs.
A Pit That Runs in a Dry August
Once you know what is connected, the running pattern starts speaking clearly. A pit that cycles through hot, dry afternoons and goes quiet on cool days is being fed by cooling equipment, not by the ground. A pit that runs for a few minutes after somebody does laundry is being fed by the laundry. Putting Indoor Water Outdoors Properly
Everything a Raleigh pump lifts leaves by one pipe, and where that pipe ends decides whether the work counted. Water released a step from the wall soaks back down through the soil, rejoins the drainage at the footing and returns to the pit, so the pump lifts it again and the household concludes the equipment is undersized. Testing It, and Then Watching It on a Dry Day
Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit until the float switch lifts. The pump should start, take the level down, and stop cleanly without kicking back on a moment later. Listen for a motor turning with no water moving, and check the intake screen for the film that a warm feed builds up. Twice a year is enough, and the sensible months in North Carolina are early spring and again before the cooling season gets serious.
Then do the free half. On a dry day with nothing running in the house, go and look at the pit. If it is filling, something is feeding it that is not the weather, and you have just found the most useful fact anybody could bring to a service call.
