A sump pit is the last thing on anybody's mind during severe weather. Every household across Nebraska knows the routine. The sky goes a strange color, the phones go off, and everyone moves to the lowest floor of the house. What almost nobody thinks about while they are down there is that the same weather system pushing them into that room is capable of putting water into it, and that the pump which would normally deal with that is running on electricity the storm is in the process of taking away.
One Storm, Two Jobs for the Same Space
This is the thing that makes an Omaha pit different from a pit in a market with gentler weather. Elsewhere, a failure means wet carpet and an insurance conversation. Here it can mean the room the family has been told to use is filling while they are in it. That does not make the pump a safety device and nobody should sell it as one.
