The IICRC sorts a loss into three categories, and on flat, saturated ground the deciding question is usually not what failed but what the water traveled over before it got inside. Two losses of identical volume can land in different categories purely on their route.
- Category one, clean: water straight off a supply line, a water heater connection or an ice maker line, still sanitary at the moment it escapes and sanitary when it hits the floor if it went nowhere else first.
- Category two, gray: discharge carrying contaminants, from a washing machine, a dishwasher or an overflowing fixture, which needs cleaning and sanitizing on top of extraction.
