Somebody stands at the bottom of the stairs looking at a wet floor and a pump that is not running, and the conclusion writes itself: the pump has failed. A pit that stays low while water appears on the floor is telling you the opposite, and no pump on the market is the answer.
There is a third reading worth knowing. A pit that fills extremely fast and never empties fully points at the pump being outmatched or at the water going out and coming straight back, and that one is settled by walking outside to look at where the discharge line releases. Where it lets go is a real decision. It needs distance and grade, it must not be pointed at a walk, a drive or a boundary, and it must not be joined into a drain built for waste. How much water the pump moves per start is set by the pit, not by the motor. A pit that is too small brings the level back to the float within seconds, so the pump short-cycles and chews through the duty it was rated for. A pit that is too large lets water stand between long gaps, go stale, and drop sediment onto the intake. Neither is dramatic, and both shorten the working life of the equipment sitting in them.
The habit worth building is noticing the rhythm during ordinary rain, because that is the baseline everything else is compared against. A pump that always ran for thirty seconds every few minutes in a Kansas City downpour and now runs for two minutes has changed, and the change is the information. Most households never establish the baseline, which is why the first sign of trouble tends to be water rather than a longer run.

Two minutes, twice a year, and do it in autumn and again before the spring storms rather than in the middle of them.
What the bucket cannot tell you is whether the buried collection line is still delivering, because a bucket puts water straight into the pit and skips the entire system upstream. That question is answered by watching the pit during real rain, which is why the two checks are not substitutes for each other.
