A sump pump in Jacksonville usually sits in a space the people living above it have never once looked into. A large part of the older housing stock here was built up on piers with a vented crawl space beneath the floor structure, and that crawl space is the lowest point water can reach. Putting it somewhere it will not come back from is the half that fails here, because there is very little fall to work with anywhere in this city. A line that stops a short distance from the wall on level, already saturated ground is not draining the water, it is relocating it. The water works back down through the soil, meets the same drainage that feeds the pit, and gets pumped again.
The check valve on that line is what holds the column of water standing in the pipe from dropping back the instant the motor cuts. When it fails, the pit refills immediately, the pump restarts, and the two of them trade the same water until a motor with years left in it gives up. It is a small component and it sits behind a large share of the early replacements we are called out to.
How Fast It Cycles, and What That Rules Out
Cycling is the best diagnostic a Jacksonville homeowner has, because it can be heard from inside the house by anyone who listens for it. A pump that starts, runs a few seconds, stops and starts again is pointing at the check valve or at a sump pit too small for the water arriving. A pump that runs and runs without ever satisfying the float is saying something different: either the inflow has outrun it, or the float is stuck in the on position and the pit below it is already empty.
