Nearly every household that has watched groundwater climb a sump pit once arrives at the same conclusion, which is that they want a backup. It is the right instinct and it usually gets acted on too quickly, because a backup is not one product. It is a category containing several very different arrangements, and what separates them is not quality. It is what each one needs from the property in order to work.
The Question Behind the Question
A primary pump depends on the grid. That single dependency is the reason most Indianapolis households ever think about this equipment, because a summer line of storms takes out power and delivers water inside the same hour. Adding a second device only helps if the second device does not share that dependency, and the whole choice comes down to what the second device leans on instead. Stored charge, supply pressure, fuel and a person are the four available answers, and each one fails in its own particular way.

A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source sitting in the same pit. It needs nothing from anybody at the moment of truth, which is its great virtue. Its limit is capacity: it carries a pit for hours rather than days, and the number of hours drops sharply as the water comes in harder. The battery is a consumable. It ages quietly on the wall and a unit installed years ago and never tested is a decoration rather than a backup.
A water-powered unit takes a completely different route. It uses the pressure in the municipal supply to move water out of the pit, so it has no battery to age and no runtime limit while the supply holds. In exchange it needs that supply present at adequate pressure, it consumes treated water while it runs, and it is subject to what the local utility and code allow. On a property with a private well it is not a candidate at all. A generator moves the dependency again, onto fuel and onto somebody being awake and at home, unless it is a standby unit wired to start on its own. Each of these is a reasonable answer for some Indianapolis properties and the wrong answer for others.

What the Primary Pump Still Has to Get Right
None of the backup discussion removes the ordinary work. A float switch that has drifted against the wall of a narrow pit, or that debris has fouled, never gives the signal to start. A blocked intake screen gives a running motor and no flow. A seized impeller usually hums rather than going quiet. A failed check valve lets the column of water in the discharge line fall straight back into the pit at shutoff, so the pump restarts within seconds and grinds through its rated life at several times the expected rate.
Those four are worth checking before any money goes on a backup, because a backup fitted next to a primary pump in that condition simply moves the failure a few months down the road. The right order is diagnose, repair or replace the primary, then decide the dependency question with a clear head.
The Last Ten Feet of the Discharge Run
Wherever the water is lifted from, it has to be released somewhere that does not return it. On flat Indianapolis ground there is little natural fall to help, so a line that stops a few feet from the wall soaks down through the clay and finds its way back to the drainage at the footing. The pump then moves the same water repeatedly, and the fill rate the household believes it has is partly its own discharge coming home.
Two practical notes on that run. The check valve on it is the small part that stops the standing column dropping back at shutoff, and it accounts for a disproportionate share of early motor failures. And in an Indiana winter the exposed end can ice up, which turns a healthy pump into a pump with nowhere to send water. A blocked discharge and a dead motor look identical from the top of the stairs.
What the Interval Between Starts Is Telling You
A pit with too little water volume between its start and stop levels fills faster than the pump can comfortably clear, so the motor starts constantly. A pit that is too large lets water stand, go stale and drop sediment on the intake. Neither shows up as a symptom anybody reports, and both shorten equipment life.
The interval is also how you size a backup honestly. A pit that fills every four minutes during a wet Indianapolis night is asking a battery for far more work than one that fills every twenty, and the runtime figure printed on a box assumes a duty nobody has measured on your property. Write down what a normal interval looks like while the system is healthy, and the number stops being guesswork for everyone involved.
Testing a Backup Is Not the Same as Testing a Pump
Test the primary the usual way. Pour water slowly into the pit until the float switch lifts, confirm the pump starts, clears the pit and stops cleanly without restarting a moment later, listen for a hum with no flow, and check that the level does not jump back up at shutoff. Then walk the discharge line to its end and confirm water leaves it.
Testing the backup takes one extra step that most households never take: the primary has to be taken out of the picture, so the second unit is genuinely asked to do the work rather than sitting quietly while the first one handles it. Anything less proves the light comes on and nothing else. That is also the moment a battery's real age shows, because a unit that runs for a few minutes and fades has told you what it will do on the night in question. Twice a year is a reasonable habit, and before spring rather than after it.
What No Backup Covers
Repair, replacement, new installation, backup systems, check valve and discharge line work and full diagnosis of the pit are ours.
