Two houses on the same Charlotte street can have the same pump, fitted by the same hand in the same month, and one of them will fail years before the other. Nothing was wrong with either unit. One of them simply started and stopped a great many more times, and starting is what uses a pump up. Motors are rated for a duty, seals wear on temperature swings, and switches have a mechanical life measured in operations. Time installed is a poor proxy for any of that.
Why Two Identical Pumps Age at Different Rates
The count is set by things that have nothing to do with the pump. A pit that holds a small volume between the start level and the stop level empties in seconds and refills in seconds, so the motor is switching constantly through a wet spell. A pit with a generous working volume moves the same water in far fewer, longer runs, which is easier on everything. Add to that how much water the ground is actually delivering, and two Charlotte properties a few doors apart can differ by an order of magnitude.
This is why replacement advice given in years is close to useless, and why a technician who asks what the run pattern looks like is asking the question that matters. It is also why a household that has never noticed the pump has no idea whether it is nearly new or nearly finished.

A column of water stands in the discharge pipe above the pump whenever it stops, and the check valve is the flap that holds that column up. Let the valve fail and the column drops straight back into the sump pit the moment the motor cuts out. The level rises past the float switch, the pump starts again, and it lifts the same water a second time. Nothing sounds broken and nothing looks wrong.
What has happened is that every job is now two jobs. A pump that would have reached the end of a normal life in a Charlotte pit gets there in half the time, and the part responsible costs a fraction of the motor it destroyed. It is the single most worthwhile thing to check on a pump that seems to be running more than it used to.

Once the count is the thing being managed, several decisions that looked like details turn out to be the whole game. Pit volume is the first, and in Charlotte it is the one most people never think about. Undersized, and the water is back at the float within seconds of the pump stopping, so it short-cycles and burns through a duty rating that assumed longer runs. Oversized is not the safe extreme either, because water standing between long gaps goes stale and drops sediment on the intake, and sediment is how a healthy pump starts drawing badly.
Continuous running is the far end of the same scale and it means something different again. It can be genuinely increased inflow, it can be a float held in the on position, and it can be water going out and coming straight back in. Those three have three different repairs, and they are separated by watching one full cycle rather than by listening from the top of the stairs.
A Short Discharge Line Buys You Extra Starts
The pipe is half the system and it is where avoidable operations come from in most North Carolina installations. Water put out a step from the wall soaks down through the soil, rejoins the drainage at the footing and arrives back in the pit, so the pump lifts it again. The household reads that as a pump struggling to keep up and buys a bigger one, which lifts the same water more vigorously around the same loop.
Getting it right means enough distance and enough fall that the water leaves for good, a release point that is not aimed at a walk, a drive or a boundary, and no connection into a drain built for waste. On a tight Charlotte lot the pipe sometimes has to run further than anyone expected, and that is scope rather than an upsell.
The Backup Has a Count of Its Own
A battery backup is a second pump with its own power source, and it exists for the failure that no amount of primary capacity answers: the storm takes the electricity during the same hours the ground is delivering. Be exact about what it buys. It carries a pit through an outage measured in hours, and that figure falls as the inflow rises. It is not indefinite, and it is not a reason to leave a primary pump in service past its operations. Timing One Cycle, Twice a Year

Then, during the next real North Carolina rain, stand there for five minutes with a watch and count the starts, because that number is the one piece of information about this equipment that nobody else can give you.
Write it somewhere. When the same rain produces twice as many starts a year or two later, something has changed in the pit, in the valve or in the ground, and you will know it early rather than finding out from a wet floor.
What a New Pump Does Not Reset
Replacing the motor puts the operations counter back to zero on the motor and on nothing else. A Charlotte pit that was too small is still too small. A discharge line that returned the water still returns it. A check valve that was letting the column fall back will do the same thing to the new unit, and the new unit will fail early in exactly the way the old one did.
