The ground under a great deal of Boston is younger than the buildings standing on it. Spoil arrives at the surface as a mix of whatever the fill happened to contain, and a mix of rubble, ash, timber and clay lumps will not compact into a stable bed. Putting it back would buy a trench line that keeps sinking for years. Then the surface, which deserves a straight answer rather than a reassuring one. An open cut across a front is visible along its whole length when it is done. Where the run passes under a brick walk, an asphalt apron, a granite step or a paved yard, that surface comes up and it will not be invisible afterwards. Backfill and compaction are part of the work. Final surface restoration, meaning turf, paving or masonry put back to match, is scoped on the property and agreed before anything starts. Ask for it in writing on the estimate and do not assume it either way.
Locating in Ground Full of Things That Are Not Utilities
Every buried service on a Boston property is marked before the first cut. Gas, electric, water and telecom share the corridor a sewer lateral crosses, marking them is a safety and legal obligation rather than a courtesy, and no ground is opened until the marks are down.
